Five reasons why editorial is the ideal remote work

When scrolling through the Facebook postings of mothers' groups, I could identify with the pain they felt in having to choose between thriving careers and fulltime motherhood.

It was a blessing in disguise that I stumbled upon an editorial career. After four decades working from home, I would recommend it as a home-based business for these five reasons (there are more).

1. Low overheads: All you need is a laptop, internet access, and a quiet corner where you can write or edit. With basic English language skill, the art of writing and editing could be honed by your passion and perseverance.

2. Flexibility: I love being able work on my laptop while waiting for my children to finish their flute or violin lessons. If I had attended their school concert or sports day, I could burn the midnight oil to meet deadlines. It's wonderful how work-life integration is made possible with a mobile office. As a freelancer, I could adjust my workload according to the demands at the home front. Now, as a GlamMa, my mobile office enables me to stay over with my adult children and grandchildren whenever they need help.

3. Gets better with technology: Remote work gets more exciting with every innovation. Through the years, I have personally witnessed how digital technology is making remote work a breeze. Social media, Zoom, PDFs, online publications, e-books, and websites are the gifts of the Internet Age. Editorial power is literally at our fingertips!

4. High demand: There is an increased demand for editorial talent as social media craves for content. SMEs and startups outsource content creation jobs to freelancers, while bigger companies offer editors full-time remote jobs globally. I was told that the highest paid content strategist in Malaysia is working for an overseas company. She works 100 per cent from home or as a digital nomad.

5. Self-development: Freelancing has exposed me to different companies and industries. However, I appreciate most the opportunity to handle the corporate magazines of two multinational companies that exposed me to the breadth and depth of their industries. My friend joked that I was paid to learn while she spent a hefty sum on her MBA. I might not earn millions, but I feel rich with the knowledge and experience gained throughout my freelancing career.
